Session I: Keynote Rita Lombardi
Topic: Observing and Discussing Art

Slow Looking: Practice looking in a way that fosters emotional reaction and connection to a piece of art and bypasses the potential barriers many feel when talking about art or visiting an art exhibit.

How do we talk to that 2nd grader with hurt feelings because someone called their drawing “scribbles”?
How do we get the 7th grader to stand independently from their peers and talk about what they like?
How do we reassure the high schooler that they don’t have to have it all figured out to go to college?

In this workshop participants will be given the tools to:
– Get people to talk – don’t underestimate the power of an awkward silence!
– Talk about anything – yes, even that picture your phone took while it was in your pocket.
– Create a space where everyone feels safe and heard – in less time

Participants will also have an opportunity to:
– Brainstorm ideas for helping each other with their current challenges in the art classroom.
– Share victories and new methods discovered in the age of Zoom.
– Engage in a real-life critique of a randomly chosen photograph to practice what we have learned.

Rita Lombardi is an artist, writer, mentor and educator who resides in Providence, Rhode Island. She taught college freshman and sophomores exclusively for 6 years and has also taught in community colleges, state universities and private liberal arts colleges. She received her MFA from The University of Connecticut and her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited in museums and private galleries and is in the collection of the Munson Williams Proctor Art Museum. She is a contributing editor to Lenscratch, a fine art photography blog.

Lombardi did not follow a straight path to her current roles and knows many of you didn’t either. She believes in the value of taking the road less traveled and listening to your gut. Her teaching style is intuitive and supportive of the student. She believes in meeting students where they are and helping them see and get to the next phase in their journey.

Session II: Creating Art Books with Artist Janaya Kizzie

Workshop:

I am bound: Reflecting on personal history to observe the past, present and future.
During this session, attendees will 1) create an art book (tangible and digital) 2) reflect on their own relationship with history to explore the pedagogical opportunities in teaching history differently than the traditional narrative 3) use artistic and literary techniques of erasure, poetic essay and found sculpture to explore methods of historical recall to “fill in” what the Eurocentric, white-supremacist historical narrative perceives as “gaps” in the histories of marginalized communities.

Workshop methods: off-camera work, camera-only activities, digital publication, live document editing, real-time art demonstration. No specific materials are required for this workshop.

Janaya Kizzie (she/they) is an artist, author, archivist, and historian living in the Providence area. As an archivist Kizzie processed the AS220 Collection, documenting the history of arts and place-making at the Providence Public Library in 2016. Kizzie was named the Rhode Island Arts and Culture Research Fellow for the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities in 2019.

Kizzie performs and binds books as Hidden Here Press, including Dead Again a biographical chapbook, and Linea Nigra, a performed book of water, ink and layered voices. Kizzie’s work has appeared at national food and storytelling series, Tender Table, performance series Luna Loba, Providence Fringe Fest and Creature Conserve’s Urban Wildlife Exhibit.
