Workshop Description: The design of this workshop allows participants to meet the requirements for renewing a professional license with a particular focus on the requirements for instruction and participation of students with special needs. This workshop provides an overview of federal and state special education laws and regulations and the general educators’ and related service providers’ roles and responsibilities with special education. Other topics include access to and understanding of documents such as a school’s District Curriculum Accommodation Plan, the Individualized Education Program, and to a lesser extent, 504 plans. Typically, topics such as inclusion, collaboration, consultation, assessment, and accommodations and modifications are part of this workshop.
WORKSHOP LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will know:
how to access sections of state and federal law, including IDEA, 603 CMR 28.00, and Section 504
general educators ‘and related service providers’ roles regarding special education and the IEP
how to write and interpret various elements of the IEP
the difference between accommodations and modifications (specially designed instruction)
how to access and the potential value of the DCAP
some strategies for inclusion and collaboration
WORKSHOP FORMAT – This workshop is provided remotely via Zoom. Registrants participate in three 2-hour virtual sessions for a total of 6 hours. The other 9 hours that make up the 15 PDP hours include assigned readings, collaborative discussions, and targeted activities between the virtual sessions for a total of 9 hours. Registrants receive 15 PDPs for participation in this workshop’s virtual and activity assigned portions. Registrants receive individual feedback on assigned activities.
WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS
Participants need access to a real IEP with redacted student information
Participant access to materials through Google drive
Participant ability to access and use Zoom presentation platform
A minimum of 8 participants is required for this workshop
