Course Description: Dates: 1/10/22,1/24/22,1/31/22 Time: Virtual Sessions 3:00-5:00 Cost: $250 SMEC Member District $275 Non MemberThis workshop is designed to assist participants in meeting the requirements for renewing a professional license with particular focus on the requirements for instruction and participation of students with special needs. This workshop provides an overview of federal and state special education laws and regulations. Other topics include; the general educator’s and related service providers roles and responsibilities with special education, District Curriculum Accommodation Plan, portions of the Individualized Education Program, specially designed instruction, inclusion, and collaboration. WORKSHOP LEARNING OUTCOMES Participants will know: - how to access sections of state and federal law including IDEA, 603 CMR 28.00 and Section 504
- general educators ‘and related service providers’ roles regarding special education and the IEP
- how to write and/or interpret various elements of the IEP
- the difference between accommodations and modifications (specially designed instruction)
- how to access and the potential value of the DCAP
- some strategies for inclusion and collaboration
WORKSHOP FORMAT – Due to COVID-19 this workshop is provided exclusively online. Registrants will participate in three 2-hour virtual sessions for a total of 6 hours. In addition, readings, collaborative discussions and projects will be assigned between the virtual sessions for the equivalent of 9 hours. Registrants will thus receive 15 PDPs for participation in the virtual and assigned portions of this workshop. WORKSHOP MATERIALS • Support Materials compiled by instructor and available on Google docs RENEWING A PROFESSIONAL LICENSE This workshop is designed to assist participants in meeting the requirements for renewing a professional license. The goals of this workshop align with the Massachusetts Department of Education Regulations for Educator Licensure (603 CMR 7.00). http://www.doe.mass.edu/licensure/advance-extend-renew-license.html Regardless of when an educator is expected to renew their professional license, if employed the educator must obtain final approval of their individual professional development plan by their supervisor; the educator must have a minimum of 10 PDPs in a topic area to use the PDPs towards license renewal. Because the requirement for licensure requires at least 15 PDPs related to training in strategies for effective schooling for students with disabilities and the instruction of students with diverse learning styles, this workshop is designed to allow the participant to gain up the 15 PDP requirement via the workshop format described above. | |
Presenter: Allan Blume is a former Associate Professor of Practice in Special Education at Simmons College. Allan’s primary areas of instruction and expertise are the laws, regulations and processes of special education as well as state and federal requirements for the provision of special education services. Prior to Simmons, Allan worked for 18 years as a special-education teacher in public schools and educational collaboratives in Massachusetts. He consults on federal and state special-education regulations, transition services and other education topics with universities, public and private schools and collaboratives, both in the United States and internationally.
