DESCRIPTION:  Helping Traumatized Children Learn

Utilizing information from the Massachusetts Advocates for Children Report and Policy Agenda, research from Bessel van der Kolk, MD and material from Gordon Hodas, MD, as well as examples from the presenter’s current practice, this workshop will present information on the impact of trauma on learning. Participants will learn how trauma impacts child development, and affects physical, mental and emotional health. Strategies for educators and counselors will be explored and practiced.

*Dr. Denise Howley is Program coordinator of the North River Collaborative Behavioral Health Initiative, coordinating the Elementary Counseling grant implementation in NRC’s eight member school districts. Dr. Howley is a licensed clinical social worker who has been a teacher and administrator with both special and regular education children and adolescents for over 25 years. She has a BA in Religion from Allegheny College, a MA in Religious Education from Fordham University, a MSW from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from Simmons College. Dr. Howley has been adjunct professor at Northern Essex Community College, Mercyhurst University, Simmons College and Salem State University. In addition to providing direct clinical work to individuals and families, she has taught mindfulness practices to children and adults in community and educational settings, and is committed to helping children and adults recognize the full potential of their brains toward the creation of genuinely happy and successful lives.
